Why Consistent Training Makes Happier Dogs
A well-trained dog is a happy dog — and a happy owner. Training builds trust, reduces problem behaviours, and keeps your dog mentally stimulated. The good news: you don't need a professional trainer to start. With the right tools and techniques, you can build great habits at home.
The Foundation: Positive Reinforcement
Positive reinforcement is the most effective and humane training method. Reward the behaviours you want — sit, stay, come — with treats, praise, or play. Ignore unwanted behaviours instead of punishing them. Dogs repeat what earns a reward.
Essential Training Tools
Training Collar
A remote training collar lets you reinforce commands from a distance. Modern collars offer vibration and sound modes — not just static — making them effective and comfortable for sensitive dogs. Always start with the lowest setting and combine with treats for best results.
Automatic Ball Launcher
Exercise is essential for a trainable dog. A tired dog is an attentive dog. An automatic ball launcher like the one in our store keeps your dog physically active without requiring you to throw hundreds of times — freeing your energy for focused training sessions.
Treat Dispenser & Puzzle Feeder
Mental stimulation is as important as physical exercise. Puzzle feeders make mealtime a training exercise — your dog has to problem-solve to earn their food. This reduces boredom and curbs destructive behaviour.
5 Commands to Start With
1. Sit — Hold a treat above your dog's nose and slowly move it back over their head. As they follow it, their bottom will naturally lower. Say 'sit' as it happens, then reward immediately.
2. Stay — Ask your dog to sit, then open your palm toward them and take one step back. Return and reward. Gradually increase distance and duration.
3. Come — Crouch down, open your arms, and call your dog's name followed by 'come' in an excited voice. Reward immediately when they reach you.
4. Leave it — Place a treat on the floor, cover it with your hand. When your dog stops trying to get it, reward with a different treat from your other hand.
5. Down — From a sit, hold a treat at your dog's nose and slowly move it toward the floor. As they follow, their elbows will lower. Reward when fully down.
Training Tips for Canadian Winters
Cold weather can make outdoor training challenging. Keep sessions short (5-10 minutes) and move indoors when temperatures drop. A good harness and reflective collar keep your dog safe during dusk walks in the winter months.
